Class Reading
The name of this book is Pompeii, a novel by Robert Harris. It is not quite possible to tell the purpose of this book in the beginning, but I have a feeling that it has something to do with the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. The narrative hook of this story is "Already he could feel the heart of the morning beginning to build, the promise of another day without rain." This narrative hook tells you what is going on in this book: it implies that the part of Italy that they are in is in a drought. Five key words are aqueduct (an artificial channel for conveying water), foothold (a place where a person's foot can be lodged to support them securely, especially when climbing), Misenum (an ancient port in Campagna), incline (an inclined surface or slope), and engineer (a person who designs, builds, or maintains something). from what i can tell from the first chapter, this book sounds really good. I have a feeling that I will truly like this book, and it seems to me like it is the type of book that I will not want to put down.
