message in a bottle

The disaster in this story consisted of the ship being hit and destroyed. When this happened, there were only two survivors for the time being. The device that the author used was that he kept the reader guessing and it the edge of his seat. The message keeps the reader interested because it keeps him guessing. "And thundering of ocean and TEMPEST, the ship is quivering- oh god!- and going down!
