He almost dies because the ship is driving south. the ship is hit by a Simoon, which is a combination of a sand storm, typhoon, and hurricane. this caused a breach.  Then the ship collides with a giant galleon. Then he steals stuff to write with when he gets aboard and uses it to keep a journal (manuscript). He lets it out into the sea. it is popular because it is being sent out for someone to read. It keeps you interested because you keep thinking when or what is it.
