New York Times Article

Like the author of the article, Nicholas, becoming a policeman was my dream as a child. The policemen looked cool because they fought against bad people and protected the citizens from crimes. However, after I read this article, I realized that those are always not right. I was pretty surprised that much people were stopped by the policemen without reason and almost of them are black and latino. They should not do that. You doubt innocent people on the street just because of their skin color? Nonsense. Even though those people looked similar to the criminals, the policemen should treat them nicely and cautiously. I might also felt really bad when if I experienced the same thing as the author. American polices are known as the best among nations, but it would be better if they also consider the other people' feelings and their situations

NY Times Article

After reading the article I lost a lot of respect for the police because as you read in this article they abuse there power, are racist to Native Americans and Hispanics. Cops should have more respect for people if they want respect given back, its sad to hear his mom told him, "Not to panic if a cop stops him". Its just bad to see cops stop this innocent guy who hasn't  done anything bad is stopped this many times just for looking suspicious.I feel this articile definitely touched many people. He shouldn't have to tell his son his mothers advice when he gets one and we should try to make a change.

NYPD

I completely agree with everything this guy is saying. i think its horrible to stop someone of a different race just because they think different races look threatening. its horrible that he has to worry about the cops stopping and searching him. he has to worry about this all the time so no wonder he look's scared or suspicious. the cops wont leave him alone.cops are supposed to make us feel safe, not nervous and scared. i have to say, after reading this I've lost all respect for all of the cops that have randomly and violently stopped him.

NY times article "witch hunt" Mario Farinella

This article is very interesting because there is two very good sides to be on. You have the side of is it right for a policeman to have random checks? And the side of if it is wrong for a policeman to check without reason. Nicholas K. Peart is a young African man who has been checked by police numerous times for no apparent reason. I believe it is wrong for a policeman to check someone without cause because it first is illegal and second there invading someones space for something they did not do. It also is racist because the NYPD says that 84% of checks are African american or Latino meaning that cops are being social profiling towards them. I support Nicholas because no one should be stopped for being a certain color of skin.

NY Times Article Reaction

The article surprised me. The statistics the writer showed were awful. I don't think this issue has anything to do with race, but more so has to do with a police officer's abuse of power. They shouldn't force people to the ground just because of suspicion, they should ask questions instead. It is sad that the writer has to worry about seeing a cop, because he might be frisked for no real reason.

NY Times Article

This article is a perfect example of profiling. Nicholas K. Peart gives us accounts of when he was frisked and stopped. The scenarios that Peart mentions entail no reason on the Police Officers part to have searched him. Also, Peart includes the amount of people in New York City had been stopped by police officers in the last year which was 600,000 and 83% of these people were African Americans and Latinos. This immediately catches the eye and raises the question if profiling and racism is involved? And whether or not police officers overuse their authority by stopping people without probable cause.

NY Times Article

This article has a lot of truth behind it. Some people think its only in movies that cops can be abusive of their power but it goes much further than the big screen because it is actually happening all over the place! it is really annoying when I am trying to get to my friends house and this police officer is very thoroughly searching my back pack like I am a criminal. He checked every single pocket on my hiking back pack and it took ten minutes of my time. I agree that this is only going to cause a resentment against the police and may eventually raise the crime rate. This man is right and not only is it a waste of his time but it can be embarrassing to be searched in public!

NY Times Article

I believe that the police are unjustly searching these African American and Latino people. There should be a change in how the police are allowed to "frisk" people. Also these people that were unjustly treated should have a way to complain legally, so this would occur less. The law is on the side of the people who are unjustly searched, so the police should be subject to prosecution for these immoral searches. The city should offer support to these people and should give numbers to call to question the police on these searches. These racist and stereotypical searches need to stop!

NY Times

You can compare this to the play The Crucible easily. In this case the police are playing the role of Abigail and the group of girls. This man is just another innocent person getting a finger pointed at him for doing nothing. It was said that the witch trials were making the town of Salem a better place but realistically it was just making the town worse. The same with this situation. It will come to a point where people are just scared to walk out of their front door. This man's experiences are completely unnecessary. It is just a case of profiling.

NY Times Article

I think the fact that this man was stopped more that three times is ridiculous. It is not right for police to frisk and cuff a guy if he didn't do anything. But, the thing is, he does not mention who he was hanging out with and what time it was during the day. It could have been past curfew and he looked suspicious. Or he could have been with troublemakers. Also, he may have smoked the marijuana in his house before they searched. These are just some scenarios he could have been in. I am not saying he did all of this but you never know how people act behind the scenes.

NY Times Article

While reading this article you come to realize that police officers are just as racist as many Americans. The reason that they do this is all because of suspicion. I do agree with the cops sometimes though as if somebody matches the description of a criminal they should be pulled over and questioned to make sure there is nothing wrong. Personally I do not like cops that much because they pull people over for stupid reasons such as the ones he listed but if someone matches a description of a criminal they should be pulled over and questioned. Then see if there is any evidence to make sure there is nothing wrong with that person.

Why Is the N.Y.P.D. After Me?

This is a very eye opening article. Its interesting how scared and shaken up I would be if this happened to me but to kids living in that area its very normal. These people are being persecuted with no evidence. Their homes are also being searched without warrants. This is an extreme case of excessive searching. A majority of the time its quite racist.
This is very similar to the witch hunts because without evidence people are being persecuted. In the Crucible many people were being killed over lies and little evidence.

Witch Hunt or Bad Luck

i think people are over reacting, there are no such thing as witch craft any more, there was no such thing as witchcraft and there will never be. Witches are totally fiction and they are never going to be real. They were brought up to be a rumor and it was really stupid and no one should believe this non sense.

Why is the N.Y.P.D. After Me?

This article shocked me. It is disturbing that a young man has to worry about being stopped by the police because of suspicion. It is unjust and an abuse of power to do such things and just get away with it. Many of the things that these officers did were not authorized and were done strictly out of profile. Some may say it is bad luck but this witch craft probably still goes on and always will. It us unfortunate that this happens and I hope to see it stop very soon. It is alright to stop him and ask him a few questions but to put on the ground and frisked is unnecessary. Who knows if he just was a suspicious looking teenager but either way the actions that took place were uncalled for.

Witch Hunt

I think that this is kinda of like a witch hunt, and I think that the black man in this story is like being hunted down because whenever he walks around town, he is stopped by a different police officer each time. The percent of people that were stopped last year by the police that were Black or Latino was 84%. Even though these people are accused of being witches, they are accused of being someone else that it kinda of like being a witch. I agree with the author of this article because I think that the police in this story were abusing their power and racially profiling the Black and Latino races.

NY Times Article

This article is a classic story of a misunderstanding based upon the fact that many people "believe they all look the same." At the time of his frisking, he asked why he was arrested. The policeman said that he fit the description of a drug dealer they were after. Over the rest of his life, he had been accused and arrested because of constant misunderstandings and other subjects to the matter that makes it seem like he was the one that did it. In my opinion, this is actually really sad. Seriously, the police need a much better system of finding and arresting people off the streets because it's almost like only they get arrested for looking like another one of his kind. It's like saying that one twin did it while the other one actually performed the action. Honestly, this story made me disappointed towards the police system of arrest and I hope they fix it soon.

witch hunt

I believe that there is not such thing as a witch today. People will claim that others are a witch for attention or for their own goods. In the witch trials, some of the people who died were for the personal gain of others. the only other explanation would be a mis-communication. Their are people that are thought to be witches because something extraordinary has happened to them. When someone is being sought out on a "witch hunt", this means that there is little evidence to prove that they are guilty. This is also used to capture people that are not liked by others. With luck, this issue will be solved soon because people are being harmed that have no reason to be.

Witch Hunt

I feel like that his complaint was definitely justified. He had done nothing wrong in his life and is certainly far from a bad person. That gives the cops no right to pull him over. This is most likely what he said which is that he is black which is probably the reason. In this article from what I can tell he portrays the cops as unfair racists.

Flu by Gina Kolata

To be honest, I'm really into the book by now, but I haven't really hit the turning point of the novel yet. Since the turning point of Flu involves science, ti's very safe to say that the turning point may have to do with finding something about the disease. This could include something that may have lead to the discovery of the cure, or something else that makes it nearly impossible to find the cure. I don't know, but I'll read and find out.
Words used in the story that I'm not familiar with are as follows:

Add 5 defined vocabulary to this post.i

I think the turning point of this book, The Catcher in the Rye, written by J.D.Salinger, is when the intense between Holden and Stradlater keeps increasing. When Stradlater comes back from date with Jane, he is pretty annoyed by English homework that Holden did which is not concerned with assignment. His reaction also makes him Holden who writes it for Stradlater. The tense is burst when Holden asks about the date with Jane, who is Holden's lover. Stradlater does not answer it and thus it drives Holden crazy. Holden severely insults Stradlater. Stradlater tries to calm his down but finally he punches on Holden's nose. He worries that it makes him into trouble and leaves the room. This event makes Holden to leave Pencey directly right away.

So by them writing to him doesn't really accomplish anything because its not going to stop the problem. but this book is really good, and i think the turning point in this book really makes it a really good book, that is a good read.

Then Stark dangled keys over Thad's shoulder and Thad grabbed them so they did not hit his face. He went to the door and put the type writer key he was given into the door and it worked. The title of my book is Ligeia, and it is just one story in a collection of novels by Edgar Allan Poe. In this book, Ligeia, who is the wife of the narrator in this story, dies of a disease. The narrator describes Ligeia as being many different things. He describes her as being more precious than a Hebrew heirloom, or her skin resembling the purest ivory. The problem is that the narrator feels very lost without Ligeia in his life. The new character is his new wife because the narrator remarries after Ligeia dies.

The main character, Holden, comes to his home located in Ossenburger Hall. In his room, he reads the book named Out of Africa written by Isak Dinesen. However, Ackley, who lives in next door, enters in his room and starts to interrupt him. Ackley is a rude and annoying boy who think he is the best person in the world. Fight Club 2

Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk. In my reading, the plot has began to develop. Tyler and the narrator are becoming friends. They are both beginning to do crazy and rebellious things together. The narrator is learning more about Tyler Durden and becoming more and more like him. His life is getting more exciting and he is overall happier.

Fight Club #1

Fight Club a book by Chuck Palahniuk, was published August 17,1996. It is a fictional work that was written by the author, in my opinion to make the reader look at the world differently. This book has an interesting narrative hook, that begins "TYLER GETS ME a job as a waiter, after that Tyler's pushing a gun in my mouth and saying, the first step to eternal life is you have to die. For a long time though, Tyler and I were best friends. People are always asking, did I know about Tyler Durden." I really like this book because it is not written traditionally, and includes more insight and thought process than other books I have read.

Flu by Gina Kolata

As per usual, the book I'm reading is Flu by Gina Kolata. The book goes into the 1918 virus that was sweeping the entire world, how it came into being, how they can vaccinate it, and what other factors may have caused it to be spread out. Many scientists, obviously too many to be named because in the first 2 chapters of this book alone, there are at least 20 scientists that have been named, are flabbergasted at this disease. The only thing stopping these M.D.'s and virus specialists are the other viruses that are popping up as well, including the infamous Swine Flu. Scientists have just been starting to put together the pieces of the puzzle, including animals as one of the major factors into how the disease spread and finding out that farms are also a type of "factory" for the virus. Seeing as how pigs are usually bred on farms, this is a very reliable guess as to where the virus may be "multiplying" and then forcing themselves onto those who are healthy. The healthy, as usual to how viruses spread, go into towns, which are very populated, and then end up coughing, sneezing, breathing out the virus, etc.
The discovery of the swine flu actually almost stops doctors into unwinding the secrets behind the Flu of 1918. Ironically, a few summers ago, swine flu was receiving so much fame, caution, and constant fear of people contracting it. Unfortunately, that was only one variant of swine flu. One of the earliest dated cases of swine actually happened in the same year as the great Flu: 1918. The reasoning behind this is simple: since the great influenza has been contracted into farms, then into pigs, and then into people, it is liable to say that the great Influenza virus may have evolved into one of the dangerous variants of swine flu. The book also states that, as far as we know, there are at least 2 different variants of swine flu all starting with the same symptoms: Coughing, sore throat, and runny nose. The book also states that scientists know of at least 20 different types of Swine Flu.
Many of the terms defined in this book are medically related. Some of them are distemper, which is basically the symptoms of dog flu, epidemic, wide spreading of the disease, infection, which is basically being afflicted with a disease, viral, which means that viruses cause whatever is viral, and, of course, influenza, the disease which this book is based upon and a disease which causes symptoms such as cough, fever, runny nose, headache, etc. This book only gets more and more interesting, and I only wish to read more.
