Ms. Found in a Bottle

In this short story, MS. Found in a Bottle, written by the notorious Edgar Allen Poe, there is much disaster and tragedy. The first catastrophe that occurred in the story is when the ship that crank due to instability was sucked into a whirlpool. The ship resurfaced in pieces, the only two survivors being the narrator and a man referred to as the Swede. They survive for five days floating on the debris of the ship, and on the fifth night, another storm strikes. Out of the storm comes a 20 ton ship that somehow the narrator finds himself on. Due to the fact that nobody on the ship can see the narrator I assume he died and returned as a ghost, another disaster. The theme of a message in a bottle is so popular because of the sublime mystery it entails. It always brings a surprise to a normal situation. This message keeps the readers interest because it has almost a science fictional theme to it. It is not as scary as most of Poe's stories however it has a unique fantastical appeal to it. My favorite quote in this story is, "It is long since I trod the deck of this terrible ship, and the rays of my destiny are, I think, gathering into a focus." This quote has a wonderful poetic feel to it and is a tad horrifying to think of this ominous ship.
